Vision

Paideia comes from the ancient Greek word for learning with special emphasis on the quest for wisdom to lead the Good Life. Paideia’s aim is to provide learning experiences that encourage diversity of people and ideas in a culture of trust, acceptance and mutual respect. These experiences stimulate exchange of ideas through social interaction and complement programs offered by other institutions in Geelong to enhance the city’s culture as a learning city. No particular philosophy or methodology is preferenced by the company.
Background
Paideia Australia Limited (ACN 138 844 943) is a registered non-profit company limited by guarantee with a board of people from diverse backgrounds. The Company is inspired by the success of initiatives currently under its sponsorship, some of which were established several years ago. These initiatives engage philosophical thinking at a practical level, helping people to reflect and seek solutions to the challenges of life, and by so doing, contribute to the cultural wellbeing of the community. They include: Philosophy and Art (conducted at the Geelong Art Gallery), Socratic Dialogues (conducted in schools and hotels), Fun and Philosophy Weekends and Philosophy Café. The most successful initiative over the last two years has been Philosophy Café held monthly at The Barking Dog Hotel. Sessions attract around 60-70 people of all ages from many walks of life and start with a philosophical talk by a prominent guest speaker followed by questions and discussion. The interest generated by these initiatives has prompted the Company to expand its range of services to cater for a growing demand not yet serviced in the Geelong region.
